OLD SCOTCH 4XI 8/133 (36)
def. by CAULFIELD NCG 7/172 (36)
S. Marinakis 39 & 1/22, J. Ross 17*, E. Shearer 2/15, B. James 1/12
It was another extremely wet and windy afternoon at Glen Huntly Park, and with the rain coming in sideways we were half-expecting to play the rain card and head home early. Caulfield, however, were determined to play through hail, sleet and anything else the sky threw at us, getting the toss done the moment the covers came off. In a team call, we chose to bowl first in a reduced-overs match - giving ourselves the best chance at points should one of our classic batting collapses arrive before the rain did.
Bowling conditions were tough from ball one, with the ball splitting after the opening over. Caulfield got off to a flyer and raced ahead before first-time bowler for the club Sammy Marinakis broke through at 1/77, taking his first wicket in OSCC colours. We struggled to find the next one, but Eddie Shearer changed things with a brilliant direct-hit runout to get us back in the contest. That triggered a little momentum as Bailey Balot and Billy James both picked up wickets of their own. Talk was up in the field with Angus Tickner providing great commentary all day and James Fish patrolling the field which saved a number of boundaries. Thank you Jim.
It was also an important day behind the stumps - Josh Richards claimed his first catch of the season and looked dangerous with the gloves all afternoon. He even pulled off a stumping that everyone thought was out except the Caulfield square-leg umpire. Nevertheless, Josh is on fire right now. The innings was closed out superbly by Eddie Shearer (2/15 off 4) and Ned Lindholm, who bowled a very tidy 0/10 off 3. Caulfield finished on a very chasable 172 in the conditions.
With the sun finally poking through, we went in to bat with plenty of hope — but the top order didn’t stick around long, and we slumped to 3/6 in no time. Thankfully, Jesse Castan (9) and Josh Richards (10) dug in and steadied things with some much-needed defence to slow the collapse. Then up stepped Sammy Marinakis again, producing the innings of the season so far with a brilliant 39, the highest score for our side this year. With plenty still required and limited time, Bailey Balot (17), Jack Ross (17*), and Tom Lindholm (11*) all gave it a solid crack, but we eventually fell short of the target.
Despite the loss, it was great simply to be back playing after a run of washouts. Plenty of good signs with bat and ball, and we look forward to taking on Old Camberwell next week - hopefully we can play in our first home game of the year and take a win.
— Tom Lindholm (4XI Captain)
