ROUND 05/06
Sunday November 23, 2025
F I R S T X I
OLD SCOTCH 1XI 230 (38.4)
def. MELBOURNE HIGH 9/190 (40)
S. Shearer 65, L. Adams 55, H. Parsons 3/34, W. Bonwick 2/35
Yet again, Sunday morning was a wet affair with some drizzling rain and ominous clouds above. However, we won the toss and elected to bat, although the damp conditions the pitch remained extremely firm and a good surface for batting. We got off to a fast start with Dawborn and Wiseman striking boundaries early, even after Dawborn departed in the 5th over, the strong start and early momentum continued with WIseman and M Sparks continuing the flurry of boundaries including multiple large maximums from Sparks. However a quick flurry of wickets saw both Wiseman (30) and M Sparks (33) departing with the score 3/88 after 15 overs. We lost another soon after to see us at 4/101 at drinks. Adams joined Shearer at the crease and begun wrestling momentum back in our favour, the pair put on a brilliant 85 run partnership before Adams finally fell for a well made 55, highlights of Luke’s innings were his creative ramps and big six down the ground followed by his iconic broomstick celebration, well batted “Stick”. Shearer continued his positive stroke play whilst hitting boundaries at will, Sam finally departed in the 35th over for 65, another quality innings from one of the clubs great. After our 40, we ended on 230, a strong score on a tough surface.
After a strong bowling performance last week, our confidence was high and were keen to rip into another quality batting order. Although wickets were sparse early, our tight lines and lengths and patience was paying off as we were able to restrict the run flow and keep Melbourne Highs opening pair from scoring too heavily. Although no breakthroughs, at Drinks we were in a strong positon at 0/80, with High needing to go at 7.5 runs per over after drinks. This tight and disciplined bowling continued with pressure and frustrations mounting, this led to a number of false shots and as we were able to take wickets continuously after the break and eventually bowling High out for 190. Shoutouts to Will Bonwick who yet again showed his class ending with 2/35, whilst Harry Parsons 3/43 and Sam Shearer 2/40 were able to rip through Highs tail to put the nail in the coffin.
An incredibly impressive performance and a win that puts us back into the Top 2 as we await the newly promoted Wesley on the Meares this coming week.

def. OLD HAILEYBURY 145 (29)
M. Griffiths 48, C. Hocking 32 & 3/26, F. Strong 2/31, J. Fyfe 2/41
After missing the previous three fixtures due to washouts and ground unavailability, it was a refreshing feeling peeling the covers off knowing we’d get to play. After winning the stump toss - a bizarre situation due to our fill-in umpire not having a coin; we elected to bat. The pitch was green yet firm with some humidity in the air from the drying outfield. This made it harder for our batsmen which was reflected with Hasker and Edney departing in the early overs. However, Griffiths (48) and Kunaratnam (29) rallied, boasting a nice partnership in the early to middle overs. At drinks we were 3/77 with a nice floor to look to launch from in the 2nd half of the innings. Howie Japp (30) scored at a great pace and elevated the run rate with his speed between the wickets and Bodon (13) looked very dangerous before being bowled. At 6-149 with 8 overs left we were aiming for 200+, Hocking (32) and Bennett (30*) helped us achieve that with their great running between the wickets and a filthy paddle sweep by Bennett. At the end of our 40 we had totaled 213 for the loss of 7 wickets.
We opened our bowling innings with Stavris (2/43) and Fyfe (2/41) who were bowling to two attacking minded opening batsmen, Fyfey broke through with a much welcomed wicket finished with a nice catch by Edney at first slip having them 1-49 after 8. Fyfey then backed it up an over later removing their 3rd batsmen and we regained a sense of control over the game. Hocking (3/26) was injected into the game to slow down the game and force Haileybury’s batsmen to generate their own power rather than harnessing it off the bowling. Charlie bowled fantastically claiming two quick wickets backed up by Strong (2/31) removing the other opening batsmen with an off cutter. They were 6/92 and the quality of batting had severely decreased, we pushed for a bonus point however came up short. We had them all out for 145 and were pleased to get our first win on the board.
