ROUND 04/05

Sunday November 16, 2025

FIRST XI

OLD SCOTCH 1XI 72 (28.3)

def. by OLD HAILEYBURY 94 (33)

P. Burchard 21*, S. Dawborn 13, W. Clark 3/5, S. Shearer 3/28

On a Wet Sunday afternoon, we headed out to Old Haileybury for a GF Rematch. After some strong rainfall during the warmup we managed to get underway at 12:30pm sharp with Gerry (umpire) keeping things moving on even with some hesitation from all players. However, with ball in hand we were ready to get underway. A wicket in the 2nd over had us flying early and with another in the 6th over we were off to the perfect start. Goodwill (2/16) and Bonwick (2/17) continued to mount the pressure and get breakthroughs. With Old Haileybury at 4-83 the game was still in the balance, before we were able to fly through the rest of their batsmen and dismiss Haileybury for 94, with Sam Shearer (3/28) sweeping the tail and Clark (3/5) chiming in for a late cheapie thanks to a TK screamer.

With 94 to chase, some would presume this to be straightforward. However, on a wet wicket and a strong opposition bowling attack, this was never going to be easy. And, that it wasn’t. To Old Haileybury’s credit, they bowled very well and reaped the rewards. Old Scotch were dismissed for a miserly 72 with Paddy Burchard playing a sole hand with 21* to keep us somewhat in the game.

We move onto next week where we face another of our recent Grand Final opponents, Melbourne High.

— Will Clark (1XI Captain)

SECOND XI

OLD SCOTCH 2XI 7/278 (35)

def. by OLD MELBOURNIANS 5/279 (30.4)

A. Callaghan 67, M. Sennitt 61, T. Loveridge 2/36, T. Hucker 1/26

Round 4 took the 2s to Flack Oval 2, a ground that can only be described as unsuitable for grown men for what proved to be a high-scoring affair against old rivals Old Melburnians. After losing the toss and being asked to bat first on a true wicket, the boys settled in for what looked like a big day with the bat.

Charlie Schilling and Mitch Sennitt wasted no time asserting control. Schilling set the tone early, cracking six boundaries in a sharp 28 off just 23 balls before skying one. Sennitt continued the assault, timing the ball superbly and finding the rope regularly on his way to a well-made 61 off 68, including two clean sixes.

Andrew Callaghan kept the pressure on the bowlers, striking a commanding 67 from only 43 deliveries, with six fours and three sides. Tom Loveridge added further punch with a brilliant 40 from 22, launching four sixes in a blistering cameo that kept the scoreboard rolling. Tom Fish followed with a chunky 39 off 30, helping push the total well beyond 250. With cameos from Sam Dethridge and Tom Edney, the 2s closed at a formidable 7/278 from 35 overs, setting up a genuine challenge on a small ground.

With ball in hand, we knew it would be tough to defend. Joel Bennett bowled with pace but without luck, conceding 46 across his opening spell. Tom Hucker provided the first breakthrough, taking 1/26 from his three overs and briefly swinging the momentum. Ben McMahon followed with 1/54 from seven, beating the bat several times but punished when he missed his mark on the small surface.

Charles Hocking worked hard in the middle overs and got a wicket at a key stage, but was found by a batsmen who hit the ball extremely cleanly, finishing 1/68 while Tom Loveridge again chipped in with wickets, taking 2/36. However, despite the efforts, OMs built their chase around a series of strong partnerships, capitalising on the true wicket and short boundaries.

With around five overs remaining, the visitors passed the target five wickets down, completing a polished chase that left the 2s frustrated after setting such a competitive total.

While the result didn’t fall our way, the batting display was one of the best of the season, and the group showed patches of bowling that can be built on heading into next week. With a few tweaks with the batting and more consistency with the ball, the 2s will be well placed to turn the result around when we meet OMs again next week

— Andrew Callaghan (2XI Captain)
