OLD SCOTCH 1XI 6/225 (40)

def. OLD XAVERIANS 64 (23)

N. SPARKS 64, S. DAWBORN 53, L. FRANCIS 5/20, H. GOAD 3/15

Winning the toss and batting on a nice afternoon to get first use of what is usually a pitch that provides an even contest between bat and ball. After loosing a wicket early, Sam Dawborn then got into his work making a well compiled 53 in quick time. Nick Sparks rode some luck and anchored the innings well making 64. Great contributions by Luke Adams and Andrew Callaghan at the back of the innings got the team to 225 after our 40 overs which we thought was about par going into the innings break.

Knowing we had to bowl well and take wickets up the top to put us in a good position Lachie Francis was excellent taking 3 early tickets. Harrison Goad kept things tight at the other end before getting some reward for effort with 3 wickets of his own. Lachie completed his maiden 5fa for the club finishing with impressive figures of 5/19 off 8 overs. With Old Xavier being reduced to a remarkable 8/25, the final partnership showed some fight before finally being bowled all out for 64.

9 wickets was all that was required due to one of the Xavier players being unable to bat due to a nasty knee injury during the first innings, which was diagnosed by Dr William Bonwick as a potential LCL tear out in the middle!

OLD SCOTCH 2XI 8/217 (40)

def. OLD WESLEY 160 (38.2)

L. GANCE 52 & 3/24, C. SCHILLING 47, J. BENNETT 3/16, C. HOCKING 2/35

A return to Scotch for our first home game of the season saw the Second XI win the toss and bat on the Meares against Old Wesley.

Eddie Shearer got off to an aggressive start, taking the first over for 16 runs on his way to a quick-fire 21 off 17 balls. Charlie Schilling (47 off 64), Mitch Sennitt (33 off 38) and Lachy Gance (52 off 55) all batted brilliantly and at a great tempo to give us the upper hand and set the platform for a big total. Handy late contributions from Tom Loveridge (16 off 18) Tom Edney (21 off 18) and Charlie Loveridge (13* off 15) helped propel us to a score of 8/217 off our 40 overs.

Defending a good score, the focus was on bowling consistently and looking to win the game in the field by taking our chances and fielding with intensity. An early wicket to Joel Bennett and a runout from Charlie Loveridge quickly put Old Wesley on the back foot at 2/9. After Bennett and Tom Loveridge took the new ball, we turned to our spin quartet of Charlie Loveridge, Tom Fish, Charlie Hocking and Lachy Gance. The required run rate continued to slowly climb as we built the pressure on the opposition. Fish (0/26 off 5 overs) and Loveridge (1/42 off 8) asked questions but the Old Wesley batsmen pounced on any loose deliveries. Then talisman Hocking worked his magic, taking two LBWs either side of drinks to leave Old Wesley in trouble at 5-94 after 22 overs.

As the required run rate climbed, Old Wesley never really had a crack at chasing the target. Gance (3/24 off 6.2) bowled cleverly through the middle overs and Bennett returned to clean up the tail finishing with 3/16 off 7. Old Wesley bowled out in the 39th over for 160 to give the Second XI a pleasing 57-run win, with even contributions from everyone.

In a quirk of the fixture, we look forward to playing Old Wesley at home again next Sunday on the Melville.

OLD SCOTCH 3XI 135 (39.5)

def. by OLD CAMBERWELL 9/136 (36.1)

B. MAKOWSKI 35, S. PRIOR 33, H. PARSONS 2/13, B. BALOT 2/4

An excited Old Scotch 3s were playing their first home game of the season on the Melville against Old Camberwell. Old Camberwell won the toss and sent Scotch into bat. Scotch struggled early with the bat losing many wickets cheaply, however opening batsmen Ben Makowski’s 35 runs helped steady the ship. Luckily Old Scotch’s tailenders managed to pile on 60 runs including a 46-run partnership between Fred strong (17*) and Sam Prior (33.) With 135 runs on the board we had put up a defendable total.

Old Scotch opened the bowling with Harry Parsons (2/13) and Gary Bennett (2/24) who both got off to blistering starts leaving Old Camberwell 4-22. The introduction of Fred Strong (1/16) into the attack quickly saw another wicket fall with Camberwell 5-32. Camberwell then got the better of the bowlers with a 68 run partnership before Makowski (1/21) bowled the inform batter. With hope dying Bailey Balot (2/4) took two quick wickets leaving Camberwell requiring 3 runs to win with 3 overs 9 down who unfortunately managed to chase our total.

The boys will look to gain their second victory next week against MCC at Beaumauris.

— Nic Bennett (3XI Captain)
