SECOND XI
OLD SCOTCH 2XI 6/160 (35.1)
def. MELBOURNE HIGH 159 (40)
C. Schilling 34, M. Sennitt 32, J. Bennett 2/27, T. Loveridge 2/29
After a strong performance in Round 1, the 2s arrived for Round 2 looking to build on the early momentum. Losing the toss and being sent into the field on a wicket offering a hint of movement, the group embraced the challenge with a disciplined bowling performance.
Joel Bennett got things going immediately, finding good areas from the outset and picking up two important early poles in a lively spell. From the opposite end, Tom Hucker continued his impressive start to the season, delivering a typically controlled first few sets for just 29 runs. Tom Loveridge once again proved reliable through the middle, shaping the ball nicely and claiming 2/29 from his eight, while restricting scoring during a key passage of play. Lachy Gance offered another valuable breakthrough, working into rhythm and finishing with 1/23 from six. Tom Fish rounded out the attack with 1/24 from his five overs, importantly contributing in areas other than the field. Despite a strong collective effort and wickets shared across the board, a couple of partnerships allowed the opposition to push the total to something competitive, leaving us with work to do in the chase.
Our reply started brightly. Charlie Schilling crashed and bashed his way to 34, while Mitch Sennitt added a controlled 32 to help build a solid early platform. Hugo Boreham then added some spark with a brisk 27 off 30, including a cleanly struck maximum as we pushed towards a strong position. Tom Murphy provided stability through the middle, grinding out a valuable 32 from 47 balls, but wickets began to fall around him. Andrew Callaghan added 11 off 15 and Ned Macmillan chipped in with 13, and with the game in control, unfortunately Murph fell with Mike blocking out a ball and Loveridge finishing the game with the bat.
Another strong win against typically one of the stronger sides puts us in a good spot 3 rounds in at 2-0, a stern test against old enemies OM’s awaits next week.

FOURTH XI
OLD SCOTCH 4XI 76 (33.2)
def. by OLD WESLEY 8/176 (40)
J. Ross 27, B. Balot 22, H. Wild 2/26, S. Prior 2/27
Our second outing for the 4XI saw us head out to Glen Waverley on a wet and windy day to take on Old Wesley.
We lost the toss and were sent in to bowl, which started well with Tom Lindholm striking early to have them 1/3. The next partnership dug in, with plenty of dots keeping things tight as they moved to 1/60 after 20 overs. At drinks we felt comfortable – the two batsmen were settled but showing little intent to accelerate. A mid-spell change of ends (through the use of Nick Bruce’s crafty spin) brought rewards as Will Bracegirdle broke through with a great wicket, followed soon after by two quick ones from Sam Prior, leaving Wesley 4/73 after 26. As the middle overs rolled on, their run rate began to lift, but Hector Wild pulled things back nicely with two key wickets to halt their momentum at 6/134 from 36.
The innings was wrapped up well by Billy James and James Fish, each grabbing a wicket to restrict Wesley to 8/176 – a strong bowling performance all round in tough conditions. A positive sign from our bowling innings is that we finally found our keeper for the season – Josh Richards looked like a natural out there, saving byes down the leg side and keeping the batsmen in their crease to our slower bowlers. Watch this space.
Chasing 177, debutant Sammy Marinakis opened with Angus Tickner to face the new ball, but rain and a strong wind made batting extremely difficult. Unfortunately, both openers – and the next three that followed – fell cheaply, leaving us struggling at 5/11. Once again, Bailey Balot stood tall amid the collapse, crafting a hard-fought 22 and forming a valuable partnership with Jack Ross, who made a gritty 27. Despite their efforts, we were bowled out for 76, with seven players scoring one or less – a reminder there’s a bit of work to be done in the nets this week.
A tough day out in tough conditions, but plenty to take away. We’ll look to bounce back in our first home game next week against Caulfield.
— Tom Lindholm (4XI Captain)
