MATCH REVIEW
The boys had their final home game for the regular season over the weekend against the traditional nemesis, Old Xavier. We were sent in to field first, a rarity for the twos who for the most part of the season have batted first. This presented a good chance to chase a score in preparation for the upcoming finals series.
James Halse (0/23 off 8) and Ryan Higgins (2/25 off 8) kicked things off well, bowling tight lines, which brought about the first two wickets form Higgo’s opening spell. From there, the boys really tightened the screws with great spells from Justin Baumgarten (1/23 off 8), John Stavris (2/19 off 6) and Charlie Hocking (2/25 off 8) setting us up beautifully to have Xavier 7/138 after the allotted 40. The most pleasing aspect was the immense pressure in the field, culminating in a number of catches and really making sure Xavs were unable to blow their total out to 160-170.
Despite the low total, the twos have been all too accustomed to a collapse so the game was far from over. The openers strode to the crease and all bar a couple of half chances, really put the game to bed. Charlie Schilling (39) and Mark Griffiths (84 no) kicked into gear and got us to 85 before the loss of the first wicket. From there, Griffo did the rest, winding back the clock with a superb knock, which no doubt would’ve ended in another century had there been a few more runs to get. For me, the best shot was the advance and then lofted drive over cover.
The 9 wicket victory just about cemented our spot in the top 4 as we now shift our attention to the final game of the home and away season against Old Carey.
