DIVISION TWO

OLD SCOTCH 2XI 3/214 (40)

def. by EAST MALVERN TOORONGA 6/215 (39.5)

A. Callaghan 105, M. Griffiths 87*, N. Bennett 1/24, J. Stavris 1/25

The 2XI were at home against EMTCC looking to secure their first win of the season after a rocky start. Winning the toss and batting first Eddie Shearer 18 and Mark Griffiths 89* got us off to a strong start with Fred accessing the power play over the top and Griff getting many of his cut shots away.

After Fred departed, Andrew Callaghan strode to the crease and put together a strong innings. Although slow going at the start, Callas picked up the run rate, brutually putting EMTCC bowlers to the sword to bring up a maiden ton for the club. Callas fell on the second last ball of the innings while Griff carried his bat and we ended the innings at 3/214.

Things didn’t start great with the ball. 3 dropped catches and a hamstring injury to Gary Bennett meant we were on the back foot early. EMTCC were racing away early, on their way to a cruisy victory. things needed to change, and John Stavris (1/25 off 7) wound back the clock, taking a wicket with his first ball and his opening spell going for 9 off 5 overs, including 3 maidens. Once again the screws were tightened. This resulted in the fall of wickets to Jack Ross, Nic Bennett and Charlie Hocking. Wickets fell, but the runs continued and it was clear it was going to go down to the wire. School First XI skipper Harry Jones claimed his first wicket for the club dismissing the in form batsmen, however EMTCC galvanised and pushed towards the total.

The innings came down to the second last ball when EMTCC finally hit the winning runs. A shattering loss but a much stronger performance and showing overall from the twos. We are back at home this week against league leaders AJAX in what will be another tough encounter.

— John Stavris (2XI Captain)
